OK, i pretty much took over payments on the car from the start of the loan. Loan always stayed in his name. Now, 5 years later, i'm done paying for it and we got the title in his name. How do we change it over to my name? Do we put it down as a gift?
Is there an easy way to do it without getting taxed? I'm not sure what the laws are about this.

You should ask the dept. of motor vehicles where you live what the exact procedure is. Being that you are family members, he can probably sell it to you for a dollar, without incurring tax consequences. Good Luck.
