How can I get a transfered car title when no one knows the person on it?

I live in KY, and recently our roommate joined the navy and left behind an old car that was given to him by his dad. After we wrecked our car, this hoopty became our only option, but we cannot update the registration, because no one knows who the original owner of this car is!!

Is there anyway we can change the title without driving through the hills of KY to find the guy with the title? How can I get a transfered car title when no one knows the person on it?
D.M.V. may be able to find out by using the VIN.some states have a way of checking in other ways to.is his dad still living?if not you may just need a death/cerf.to take care of this.call the D.M.V. in your state and explain the problem, they should be able to tell you over the phone what process you will need to go through. How can I get a transfered car title when no one knows the person on it?
Has the car been abandoned? Gifted to you?

The only way you can change a title is for the owner to sign the title to release their interest in it.

The DMV can locate the owner by the plate number, but they're not allowed to give you the name or address.

I think your best bet would be to claim it abandoned and have the DMV re-create a new title.

I'm assuming it's value in under $5,000. You can't do this with expensive cars. It raises red flags.

Anyway to contact your Navy friend?
