Can the car color at carfax be wrong?

hi guys,

i'm searching for a used car for a while. i saw a pretty nice one. it's very new, only 20k miles and probably $1000 cheaper than kbb price.

the owner said that he has a baby coming soon, so he needs a bigger car. he even agrees to trade with him with a bigger car.

but the owner gave me a vin number, and the carfax report of that number doesn't match the car posted by the owner. the owner lives in CA, but the previous two purchase record of the car happened in GA. most importantly, according to carfax, the car color is noted as red. but on the photo posted by the owner, the car is actually black.

the owner said that, that is a mistake of carfax and he doesn't know how to change it. and he told me he recently changed the car title form GA to Cali title. should this information appear on carfax also? cause i didn't see any.

normally where should i look on the actual car to find the vin number, because i'm worried that he told me an incorrect vin number to hide the car's salvage title?

and what kind of document should i ask to check the history of changing car title from GA to CA?

thank you very much. Can the car color at carfax be wrong?
This all feels very fishy...

yes carfax can, and sometimes is, wrong. Its not hard to correct an issue like color though.

If the car is titled in CA, that will show as a 'registration event' on carfax. You look on the dash, or inside the door sill to get the VIN

did you find this car on Craigslist? Is it being sold well below comparable cars? Is the owner offering to ship the car? Is he asking you to deposit the money with an escrow service.

Something about this feels all kinds of wrong. Can the car color at carfax be wrong?
This sounds like it one of the popular scam attempts. If it listed on Craigslist or some other similar site and is priced really cheap or the %26quot;seller%26quot; offers free shipping and using an %26quot;escrow service%26quot; like ebay protection, it is definitely a scam. Can the car color at carfax be wrong?
The VIN is at the bottom left hand corner of the windshield glass. Near the drivers door. It should also be on a sticker on every door, on the trunk and on the hood. If these stickers aren't there the car has been wrecked.

Verify the VIN and check for signs of a repaint. Peal back a door molding and look at the color under the rubber. Or in the trunk or under the hood. If it's red and the car is now black, this is not the car to buy.Can the car color at carfax be wrong?
Ive had a few titles over the years that had the wrong color on it. It can be something as simple as a clerical error.

But, a wrong vin, thats a totally different story.
