What do you need to do when you sell a car to another person?

When I find a buyer for my car, what paperwork do I need to register the transfer of ownership of the vehicle? Do we need to go to DMV together to change the title? How does this work? What do you need to do when you sell a car to another person?
Check with the DMV ahead of time to see if you need stuff notarized or anything as it varies from state to state. Go to the DMV with him and make sure he does the title transfer. You'll need your title and the DMV should have everything else. Make sure it's transferred. If not and he gets into trouble with the car it could come back to haunt you. What do you need to do when you sell a car to another person?
Take a few homies with you with AK-47s and baseball bats and make him an offer he can't refuse. Capisce? What do you need to do when you sell a car to another person?
This all depends on the state your doing this in. I know that in New York you must have a bill of sale (they have a form for it) which is signed by both parties, this is to decide how much tax there will be so lower the number the better. I usually use $1.00 for the sale price, especially in a trade. There is a form for the transfer of title as well. This is also signed by both parties, but only the new owner has to go to the DMV. In New York, you don't sell a car with the license plate because you can transfer the registration to another which is much cheeper than buying a new one. Hopefully this helps. It doesn't take much research, and your local DMV should prove to be very helpfull.
