Title Change?

I have a 1976 Civic that i would like to sell, but the title isn't in my name. It was given to me by a friend, who got if from the origional owner (Name on the title). The origional owner no longer lives near me, and i dont know how to contact him. The car is in bad condition, and would probably be used for just parts. What should i do?Title Change?
Legally your friend needs to take the title into his name, sign the new title over to you. Then you need to take title to it in your name and then sign it over to the new buyer.

Realistically, if it is just used for parts it's possible that the new owner wouldn't care. However he would still need to dispose of the remainder of the vehicle, and with no title that is not the easiest thing to do.

Perhaps you could apply for an abandoned vehicle title. Rules for this vary from state to state. Logon to www.dmv.org and click on your state and you may be able to find the laws governing this in your state.Title Change?
Is the title released by the original owner? If so, your friend can give you a bill of sale, or statement of gift, and along with the title, you should be able to transfer it into your name. If the title has not been released by the original owner, I wonder why your friend would have the title, in the first place, as it would be worthless to her, and she would not be able to register/title the car in her name. I suspect that is the problem you are facing. Since the car is on your property(I assume), you can apply for an abandonded title, and likely be able to receive a title in your name. Contact the DMV, take the title and any info you have regarding any owners, their addresses(as you know them). You'll likely send a certified letter to the last known address of the owner on record. When the letter is returned to you, take the letter, along with the other items and apply for title. Visit your DMV before starting the transaction, all states vary in what is required for certain transactions, and it will save you time and headache.
