Legally, the person that sold you the car had no right to do so, as he was not the titled owner of the car. The only thing you can do is ask the previous owner to sign the title over to you, so you can have a new one put in your name. You should never have paid for the car unless you saw the title first. If you can't locate the previous owner, you'll have to contact the DMV in your state and ask them what your options are.
